How to use
- Choose the generation unit
Pick Paragraphs, Sentences or Words from the radio group. Paragraphs suit full-page layout previews, sentences make longer specimens, and words give exact length control.
- Enter the quantity
Type a number into Quantity. Limits follow the unit: 1-50 paragraphs, 1-200 sentences or 1-2000 words. Out-of-range values are clamped automatically.
- Decide on the classic opening
The 'Start with Lorem ipsum' checkbox is on by default and opens the first sentence with the classic phrase. Untick it for fully random text.
- Generate and copy or download
Click Generate to produce the text, then Copy to paste it straight into a mockup. Download .txt saves a plain-text file for later.
- Reroll or clear
Every click of Generate reshuffles random words, so reroll until the look is right. Use Clear to empty the output before the next project.
About this tool
Lorem Ipsum is scrambled Latin derived from Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, used as placeholder text for centuries. It carries no meaning, but its letter distribution resembles English, so fonts, line heights and layouts render realistically. This tool generates such text by paragraphs, sentences or words with an optional classic opening, entirely in your browser.
It is made for designers, front-end developers and typographers. Fill a layout with dummy text to judge grids and whitespace first, then swap in real copy. Teaching demos, theme previews and print proofs work the same way. The output is unrestricted for commercial use, but always replace it before publishing. Client presentations benefit too: feedback stays on structure rather than wording.
How it works
Typesetters argued for a century about what belongs in a blank layout, and the surviving answer is a broken piece of ancient Roman text. The passage is not random Latin. It is a mangled extract from section 1.10.32 of Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, written in 45 BC. Centuries of typesetters chopping and copying corrupted it into the modern form. Dry-transfer Letraset sheets carried it through print shops in the 1960s, and Aldus PageMaker shipped it as default filler. A Latin professor traced the source while checking a PageMaker page.
Placeholder text earns its keep through statistics rather than meaning. Lorem ipsum's letter frequencies sit close to English, so line breaks, word spacing and the overall grey of a paragraph behave like real copy. Reviewers judge the grid instead of the prose. Repeating one word or typing gibberish produces an unnatural texture, and then line width and breaks lose their reference value. Each Generate click reshuffles a fixed word list, so the text differs every time. The length distribution stays stable, which keeps specimens comparable across the pages of a mockup.
When to use it
- Reviewing a page layout
Fill a design comp with thirty-odd paragraphs and judge whether the grid, leading and whitespace survive real article lengths. Reviewers then discuss structure instead of debating the copy itself.
- Proving a typeface
Type specimens need blocks of text to show rhythm and colour. Generate up to 200 sentences, print the proof, and inspect serifs, kerning and hyphenation without licensing any real article.
- Seeding an empty CMS
A fresh theme looks broken until lists, pagination and cards have content. Bulk-generate placeholder paragraphs, import them, verify the structure, then swap in real copy before launch.
Tips & tricks
- Word mode is ideal for testing justification and line-breaking details. Sentence mode produces longer specimen blocks for print samples.
- Output differs on every click, so generating fresh text for each page of a multi-page mockup needs no manual editing.
- Always replace placeholder text before publishing. Search engines treat Lorem Ipsum content as thin, low-value copy.
Things to watch
- Latin spacing is not CJK spacing
Layouts tuned with Latin placeholder text change once real Chinese or Japanese copy arrives. Square glyphs have no ascenders and tolerate less leading, so re-verify line height with the final language.
- Match the unit to the job
Paragraph mode previews full pages, and word mode exercises justification and hyphenation. Quantities beyond a unit's limit are clamped down, so an oversized number quietly yields a shorter specimen than expected.
- Random order skews fine details
The generator draws from a fixed word list. Its length distribution differs from real prose, so widows and hyphenation points are indicative only. Proof typographic precision with genuine target-language text.
