About Design tools

Design tools serve front-end and visual work: colour picking, palettes, CSS gradients, contrast checking and favicon generation. They show what you copy: the CSS updates as you drag a gradient. Colours come out in HEX, RGB and HSL, and the contrast checker returns a WCAG AA/AAA verdict.

A gradient, a palette or a site icon is a few lines of CSS or a small image. Generate locally, preview at once, then copy the code or download the file instead of round-tripping through design software. The contrast check also catches light-grey-on-white readability problems at development time.

How to choose the right Design

  1. Build palettes from one colour

Start from a brand colour and expand it into monochrome, analogous, complementary or triadic schemes. That is more coherent than picking five colours from scratch.

  2. Trust WCAG levels, not your eyes

WCAG asks for at least 4.5:1 on body text and 3:1 on large text. If the check fails, darken or lighten one side instead of judging by sight.

  3. Copy gradient code directly

The emitted CSS pastes straight into your stylesheet, and modern browsers need no vendor prefixes. The preview and the code always match.

  4. Generate favicons at every size

A tab wants 16 or 32 pixels while touch screens want larger ones. Generate the full set of PNG sizes in one pass so icons stay crisp everywhere.

Common design mistakes

  1. Contrast is about darkness

Contrast is a luminance ratio, not depth of colour. Two saturated hues can fall under 3:1 while two greys pass. Check ratios with a tool against WCAG.

  2. More colours, richer design

Past three or four main colours a page starts fighting itself. Start with one primary and one accent; extend only when justified.

  3. Gradient stops are arbitrary

Stop positions decide whether a blend flows. Evenly spaced stops often go muddy in the middle; stagger them or interpolate in OKLCH.
