FAQ

How is age calculated?
Age is counted day by day: years are compared first, then corrected by month and day: you only turn a year older on the actual birthday. Someone born on June 15, 1995 turns exactly 30 on June 15, 2025, and is still 29 on June 14.
How are February 29 birthdays handled?
In non-leap years, when February 29 does not exist, the birthday is treated as February 28; in leap years it stays February 29. The countdown alternates between 365 and 366 days accordingly.
Can I use a future date as the reference?
Yes. After choosing "Calculate as of a specific date" you may select a future date to see the age you will be then, or how many days remain until a future birthday. The date of birth itself cannot be later than today.
Why may the result differ from what is written on my ID card?
Official records sometimes use nominal age or round to the birth year. This tool computes the exact calendar age day by day, so small differences from documents are normal.

How to use

  1. Set the date of birth

Click the Date of birth field and pick or type the birth date. A sample date is prefilled, so replace it and the results refresh at once.

  2. Choose the reference date

Keep Calculate as of today for the current age. Or pick Calculate as of a specific date for questions like how old you will be on an enrollment deadline.

  3. Read the age breakdown

The result box shows the exact age in years, months and days, plus the total days lived since birth. One format is precise, the other is easy to compare.

  4. Check the birthday countdown

Days until next birthday counts forward from the reference date. February 29 birthdays fall back to February 28 in common years, and the day itself shows congratulations.

  5. Copy everything at once

Click Copy result to capture the reference date, age, total days and birthday countdown together. Handy when filling forms or sharing with others.

About this tool

This age calculator counts real calendar days instead of rounding by year. It compares years first, then adjusts for months and days, so a full year is added only on the actual birthday. The same engine totals the days lived since birth and projects the next birthday. A February 29 birthday is observed on February 28 when the year has no leap day. That matches the completed-age rule used on official forms.

It suits ID paperwork, school and exam registrations, vaccination schedules, or tracking a child's or pet's age. To check whether a child turns six before a September 1 cutoff, choose the specific-date mode and read the age as of that day. The birth date cannot be later than today, but the reference date may sit in the future. Day-accurate results can differ from nominal document ages by design.

How it works

The Gregorian calendar was promulgated by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. It inserts a leap day every four years, skips century years not divisible by 400, and fits 97 leap years into every 400. The mean year works out to 365.2425 days. The tropical year runs about 365.2422, so the two drift apart by one day every three millennia or so. Months run 28 to 31 days, so an age in years, months and days is carried with borrowing. Dividing total days by twelve will not reproduce it. Leap days are counted individually, and a span crossing a leap year runs 366 days. That reading is a property of the calendar, not a mistake.

Write the birth date as an ISO 8601 string such as 2016-02-29. The same digits read as a different date under the month-first habit common in the United States. Age also has competing conventions. East Asian nominal age starts at one and advances at the new year. Some documents round age by year alone. One person can therefore differ by a year or two across systems. For enrollment, retirement or competition eligibility, day-accurate completed age is the safe basis. Set the reference date to the deadline in the rulebook and the verdict reads directly. Confirm which convention the form wants before you fill it in.

When to use it

  1. Enrollment deadlines

Set the reference date to the cutoff printed in the admissions notice, say August 31, 2026. The completed-age readout then answers the age requirement directly, with no mental arithmetic and no risk of entering nominal age.

  2. Birthdays across time zones

A birth certificate records a local date, and the specific-date mode works on that date alone. Celebrating in another time zone leaves the completed age on file exactly where it was.

  3. Pet and equipment ledgers

When only an approximate month is known, adopt a mid-month birth date and note the convention in the ledger. Reminders driven by total days track boosters and maintenance intervals better than rough months.

Tips & tricks

  • Official records sometimes use nominal age, so a few months of difference from day-accurate results is normal.
  • Verify the reference date before copying, so an as-of-today age is not pasted into a deadline-based form.
  • Set the reference date in the future to preview an upcoming age and the days left until that birthday.

Things to watch

  • Document ages differ

IDs and passports may record age by year or by nominal counting. A gap of months against day-accurate age is normal. Legal forms want completed age, while folk occasions follow tradition.

  • Where a leap birthday lands

A person born on February 29 has no birthday in common years. This tool observes it on February 28, while some institutions settle on March 1. Re-check against the other side's rule before signing.

  • How total days count

Total days begin the day after birth, include leap days and exclude the reference day itself. A milestone like 10,000 days is reached at midnight of that day, so celebrating a day early is defensible.
